A vulnerability was found in PHP 5.4.0/5.4.1/5.4.2 (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function apache_request_headers. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in the apache_request_headers function in sapi/cgi/cgi_main.c in PHP 5.4.x before 5.4.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a long string in the header of an HTTP request.
The weakness was published 05/11/2012 as Bug 820000 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-2329 since 04/19/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

Upgrading to version 5.4.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12516.
