A vulnerability was found in SAP NetWeaver 7.0 (Solution Stack Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function DiagiEventSource of the file disp+work.exe. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The DiagiEventSource function in disp+work.exe 7010.29.15.58313 and 7200.70.18.23869 in the Dispatcher in SAP NetWeaver 7.0 EHP1 and EHP2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via a crafted SAP Diag packet.
The weakness was published 05/15/2012 by Core Security with Core Security (Website). The advisory is shared for download at service.sap.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-2514 since 05/07/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Core Security in Ruby and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121196 (SAP NetWeaver Remote Code Execution and Denial of Service Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12412.
