A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in SAP NetWeaver 7.0 (Solution Stack Software). This vulnerability affects the function DiagTraceHex of the file disp+work.exe. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The DiagTraceHex function in disp+work.exe 7010.29.15.58313 and 7200.70.18.23869 in the Dispatcher in SAP NetWeaver 7.0 EHP1 and EHP2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via a crafted SAP Diag packet.
The weakness was disclosed 05/15/2012 by Core Security with Core Security (Website). The advisory is available at service.sap.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-2612 since 05/10/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Core Security in Ruby and been published 4 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121196 (SAP NetWeaver Remote Code Execution and Denial of Service Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12518.
