A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in hp Linux Imaging And Printing Project up to 3.9.1 (Printing Software). This affects the function send_data_to_stdout of the component Printing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. The send_data_to_stdout function in prnt/hpijs/hpcupsfax.cpp in HP Linux Imaging and Printing (HPLIP) 3.x before 3.11.10 allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on the /tmp/hpcupsfax.out temporary file.
The weakness was presented 05/25/2012 by Steve Kemp (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at hplipopensource.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-2722. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
