OpenSSL 0.9.8 public cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in OpenSSL 0.9.8 (Network Encryption Software). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing. The manipulation of the argument public with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The Diffie-Hellman key-exchange implementation in OpenSSL 0.9.8, when FIPS mode is enabled, does not properly validate a public parameter, which makes it easier for man-in-the-middle attackers to obtain the shared secret key by modifying network traffic, a related issue to CVE-2011-1923.

The issue has been introduced in 07/05/2005. The weakness was shared 06/20/2012 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at discussions.nessus.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-5095 since 06/20/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/04/2021). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2542 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64186 (SuSE 11.1 Security Update : libopenssl (SAT Patch Number 6521)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (76666), Tenable (64186) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-37156†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
