Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in kvm qemu-kvm 0.12/0.14.0 (Virtualization Software). This affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The virtio_queue_notify in qemu-kvm 0.14.0 and earlier does not properly validate the virtqueue number, which allows guest users to cause a denial of service (guest crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a negative number in the Queue Notify field of the Virtio Header, which bypasses a signed comparison.
The weakness was disclosed 06/21/2012 by Petr Matousek (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-2512 since 06/15/2011. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55490 (Debian DSA-2270-1 : qemu-kvm - programming error), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165261 (SUSE Security Update for kvm (openSUSE-SU-2011:0803-1)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (55490), SecurityFocus (BID 48499†), OSVDB (74751†), Secunia (SA44458†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-32204†). The entry VDB-61046 is pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
