Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.36.1/2.6.36.2/2.6.36.3/2.6.36.4 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function orinoco_ioctl_set_auth. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
The orinoco_ioctl_set_auth function in drivers/net/wireless/orinoco/wext.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.37 does not properly implement a TKIP protection mechanism, which makes it easier for remote attackers to obtain access to a Wi-Fi network by reading Wi-Fi frames.
The issue has been introduced in 10/20/2010. The weakness was presented 06/21/2012 (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-4648. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 610 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51949 (Fedora 14 : kernel-2.6.35.11-83.fc14 (2011-1138)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155428 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (ELSA-2011-2014)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (51949), SecurityFocus (BID 46322†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-29735†). See VDB-61060 for similar entry. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
