A vulnerability was found in Citrix XenServer 6.0.2 (Virtualization Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function set_debugreg. The set_debugreg hypercall in include/asm-x86/debugreg.h in Xen 4.0, 4.1, and 4.2, and Citrix XenServer 6.0.2 and earlier, when running on x86-64 systems, allows local OS guest users to cause a denial of service (host crash) by writing to the reserved bits of the DR7 debug control register.

The weakness was presented 09/05/2012 as 2012-09/msg00000 as confirmed posting (Maillist). The advisory is shared for download at lists.xen.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-3494 since 06/14/2012. The attack needs to be approached locally. A authentication is needed for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79483 (OracleVM 3.0 : xen (OVMSA-2012-0040)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family OracleVM Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370049 (Citrix XenServer Security Update (CTX134708)).

Applying the patch xsa12 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at lists.xen.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
