Ruby on Rails up to 3.0.3 ActiveRecord sql injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Ruby on Rails up to 3.0.3 and classified as critical. This affects an unknown part of the component ActiveRecord. The manipulation leads to sql injection. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2012-2695. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. No exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Ruby on Rails up to 3.0.3 (Programming Language Software). This issue affects an unknown part of the component ActiveRecord. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Active Record component in Ruby on Rails before 3.0.14, 3.1.x before 3.1.6, and 3.2.x before 3.2.6 does not properly implement the passing of request data to a where method in an ActiveRecord class, which allows remote attackers to conduct certain SQL injection attacks via nested query parameters that leverage improper handling of nested hashes, a related issue to CVE-2012-2661.

The weakness was published 06/22/2012 by Takeshi Terada with Mitsui Bussan Secure Directions (Website). The advisory is shared at groups.google.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-2695 since 05/14/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1505 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74881 (openSUSE Security Update : ruby (openSUSE-SU-2013:0278-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166172 (SUSE Security Update for Ruby On Rails (openSUSE-SU-2013:0278-1)).

Upgrading to version 3.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13049.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (76260), Tenable (74881), SecurityFocus (BID 53970†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-35489†). Similar entries are available at VDB-7309 and VDB-7504. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
