A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Citrix Xen 4.2.0/6.0.2 (Connectivity Software). This issue affects the function GNTTABOP_swap_grant_ref of the component Grand Table. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The GNTTABOP_swap_grant_ref sub-operation in the grant table hypercall in Xen 4.2 and Citrix XenServer 6.0.2 allows local guest kernels or administrators to cause a denial of service (host crash) and possibly gain privileges via a crafted grant reference that triggers a write to an arbitrary hypervisor memory location.
The weakness was presented 09/05/2012 as 2012-09/msg00004 as confirmed posting (Maillist). The advisory is shared at lists.xen.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Citrix. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-3516 since 06/14/2012. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370049 (Citrix XenServer Security Update (CTX134708)).
Applying the patch xsa18 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at lists.xen.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
