The physdev_get_free_pirq hypercall in arch/x86/physdev.c in Xen 4.1.x and Citrix XenServer 6.0.2 and earlier uses the return value of the get_free_pirq function as an array index without checking that the return value indicates an error, which allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service (invalid memory write and host crash) and possibly gain privileges via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was published 09/05/2012 by Matthew Daley as 2012-09/msg00001 as confirmed posting (Maillist). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.xen.org. The public release has been coordinated with Citrix. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-3495 since 06/14/2012. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62155 (Fedora 16 : xen-4.1.3-2.fc16 (2012-13443)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370049 (Citrix XenServer Security Update (CTX134708)).

Applying the patch xsa13 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at lists.xen.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
