Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.2.1 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function ext4_fill_flex_info. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The ext4_fill_flex_info function in fs/ext4/super.c in the Linux kernel before 3.2.2, on the x86 platform and unspecified other platforms, allows user-assisted remote attackers to trigger inconsistent filesystem-groups data and possibly cause a denial of service via a malformed ext4 filesystem containing a super block with a large FLEX_BG group size (aka s_log_groups_per_flex value). NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2009-4307.
The weakness was shared 07/03/2012 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-2100 since 04/04/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68654 (Oracle Linux 5 : kernel (ELSA-2012-1445)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350598 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel, nvidia: ALAS-2013-148).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.
