The WebLogic Authentication provider for BEA WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express 8.1 through SP2 and 7.0 through SP4 does not properly clear member relationships when a group is deleted, which can cause a new group with the same name to have the members of the old group, which allows group members to gain privileges.
The bug was discovered 04/13/2004. The weakness was disclosed 04/13/2004 with Bea Systems (Website). The advisory is shared for download at dev2dev.bea.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-0715 since 07/20/2004. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. A public exploit has been developed in Windows Binary (com) and been published 2 years after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at beasys.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86650 (BEA WebLogic Authentication Provider Privilege Inheritance Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 7.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftpna.beasys.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
