A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in PHP (Programming Language Software). Affected by this issue is the function phar_parse_tarfile of the file tar.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Integer overflow in the phar_parse_tarfile function in tar.c in the phar extension in PHP before 5.3.14 and 5.4.x before 5.4.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted tar file that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The weakness was published 07/07/2012 by Alexander Gavrun as Bug 823594 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-2386 since 04/19/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74645 (openSUSE Security Update : php5 (openSUSE-SU-2012:0695-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350652 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for php: ALAS-2012-095).
Upgrading to version 5.1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 23708.
