Details
A vulnerability was found in systemd up to 43. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function rm_rf_children of the file util.c of the component Logging. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The rm_rf_children function in util.c in the systemd-logind login manager in systemd before 44, when logging out, allows local users to delete arbitrary files via a symlink attack on unspecified files, related to "particular records related with user session."
The weakness was disclosed 07/12/2012 by Jan Lieskovsky as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at cgit.freedesktop.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-1174 since 02/14/2012. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74571 (openSUSE Security Update : systemd (openSUSE-SU-2012:0383-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 44 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
