Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in OpenJPEG 1.3/1.4/1.5 (Image Processing Software). This issue affects the function tcd_free_encode of the file tcd.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The tcd_free_encode function in tcd.c in OpenJPEG 1.3 through 1.5 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) and possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted tile information in a Gray16 TIFF image, which causes insufficient memory to be allocated and leads to an "invalid free."
The weakness was disclosed 07/18/2012 as tp://co (Website). The advisory is shared at code.google.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-5030 since 12/09/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70380 (GLSA-201310-07 : OpenJPEG: User-assisted execution of arbitrary code), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350636 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for openjpeg: ALAS-2012-111).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (74851), Tenable (70380), SecurityFocus (BID 53012†), Secunia (SA48781†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-35946†). The entries VDB-3516, VDB-47987, VDB-47513 and VDB-50835 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
