A vulnerability was found in moodle (Learning Management Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown functionality in the library lib/moodlelib.php of the component Password Policy. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a credentials management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-255. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
lib/moodlelib.php in Moodle 1.9.x before 1.9.15, 2.0.x before 2.0.6, and 2.1.x before 2.1.3 does not properly handle certain zero values in the password policy, which makes it easier for remote attackers to obtain access by leveraging the possible existence of user accounts that have unchangeable blank passwords.
The weakness was published 07/20/2012 by Ryan Smith (Patrick) as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.moodle.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-4587. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1552 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
By approaching the search of inurl:lib/moodlelib.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58172 (Debian DSA-2421-1 : moodle - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 1.9.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.moodle.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
