A vulnerability was found in Moodle (Learning Management Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is some unknown processing in the library blog/lib.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in blog/lib.php in the blog implementation in Moodle 1.9.x before 1.9.18, when Internet Explorer is used, allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a crafted parameter to blog/index.php.
The weakness was presented 07/20/2012 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.moodle.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-2362 since 04/19/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
By approaching the search of inurl:blog/lib.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Upgrading to version 1.9.17 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.moodle.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 24125.
