OpenStack Essex 2012.1 path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in OpenStack Essex 2012.1 (Cloud Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in virt/disk/api.py in OpenStack Compute (Nova) Folsom (2012.2) and Essex (2012.1), when used over libvirt-based hypervisors, allows remote authenticated users to write arbitrary files to the disk image via a .. (dot dot) in the path attribute of a file element.

The weakness was presented 07/22/2012 (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-3360 since 06/14/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
