Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux-PAM. Affected by this vulnerability is the function _assemble_line. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the _assemble_line function in modules/pam_env/pam_env.c in Linux-PAM (aka pam) before 1.1.5 allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a long string of white spaces at the beginning of the ~/.pam_environment file.
The weakness was released 07/22/2012 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.fedorahosted.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-3148. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69719 (Amazon Linux AMI : pam (ALAS-2013-160)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350586 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for pam: ALAS-2013-160).
Upgrading to version 0.99.7.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.fedorahosted.org.
