The insert_module function in runtime/staprun/staprun_funcs.c in the systemtap runtime tool (staprun) in SystemTap before 1.6 does not properly validate a module when loading it, which allows local users to gain privileges via a race condition between the signature validation and the module initialization.
The weakness was presented 07/26/2012 (Website). The advisory is shared at sources.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-2503 since 06/15/2011. The exploitation is known to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68313 (Oracle Linux 5 : systemtap (ELSA-2011-1089)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155722 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for SystemTap (ELSA-2011-1088)).
Upgrading to version 0.5.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
