A vulnerability was found in LibreOffice 3.5.0/3.5.1/3.5.2/3.5.3/3.5.4 (Office Suite Software). It has been declared as critical. Multiple heap-based buffer overflows in the XML manifest encryption tag parsing functionality in OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice before 3.5.5 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted Open Document Text (.odt) file with (1) a child tag within an incorrect parent tag, (2) duplicate tags, or (3) a Base64 ChecksumAttribute whose length is not evenly divisible by four.
The weakness was published 08/06/2012 by Timo Warns as Bug 826077 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-2665 since 05/14/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68591 (Oracle Linux 6 : libreoffice (ELSA-2012-1135)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156400 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for libreoffice (ELSA-2012-1135)).
Upgrading to version 3.5.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
