Details
A vulnerability has been found in Qemu 1.0 (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function mkstemp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The bdrv_open function in Qemu 1.0 does not properly handle the failure of the mkstemp function, when in snapshot node, which allows local users to overwrite or read arbitrary files via a symlink attack on an unspecified temporary file.
The weakness was released 08/07/2012 by Vincent Danen (Website). The advisory is shared at ubuntu.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-2652 since 05/14/2012. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74666 (openSUSE Security Update : kvm (openSUSE-SU-2012:0832-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (75943), Tenable (74666), SecurityFocus (BID 53725†), Secunia (SA50132†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-35935†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
