Details
A vulnerability was found in GraphicsMagick 1.3.16 (Image Processing Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function Magick_png_malloc. The manipulation of the argument proper with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The Magick_png_malloc function in coders/png.c in GraphicsMagick 6.7.8-6 does not use the proper variable type for the allocation size, which might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted PNG file that triggers incorrect memory allocation.
The weakness was disclosed 08/07/2012 by Tom Lane as Bug 844105 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-3438 since 06/14/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74944 (openSUSE Security Update : GraphicsMagick (openSUSE-SU-2013:0536-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166268 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for ImageMagick (SUSE-SU-2013:0756-1)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
