Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Zabbix up to 1.8.14/2.0.1 (Network Management Software). Affected is an unknown functionality. The manipulation of the argument itemid with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
SQL injection vulnerability in frontends/php/popup_bitem.php in Zabbix 1.8.15rc1 and earlier, and 2.x before 2.0.2rc1, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via the itemid parameter.
The weakness was published 08/15/2012 by muts as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.zabbixzone.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-3435 since 06/14/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1505 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by muts in Python and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 22 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62000 (Debian DSA-2539-1 : zabbix - SQL injection), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12779 (Zabbix popup_bitem.php itemid Parameter SQL Injection Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.zabbixzone.com.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (77195), Exploit-DB (20087), Tenable (62000), SecurityFocus (BID 54661†) and OSVDB (84127†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
