Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in HP SAN and iQ 9.5. This affects some unknown processing. The manipulation of the argument fourth with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
lhn/public/network/ping in HP SAN/iQ 9.5 on the HP Virtual SAN Appliance allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters in the (1) first, (2) third, or (3) fourth parameter. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2012-4361.
The weakness was published 08/20/2012 by Tenable Network Security with Tenable Network Security as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-2986 since 05/30/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. Required for exploitation is a authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed in Python. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61612 (HP SAN/iQ <= 10.0 Root Shell Command Injection), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (77902), Exploit-DB (18901), Tenable (61612), SecurityFocus (BID 55133†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-35975†).
