Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in Open Ticket Request System (OTRS) Help Desk 2.4.x before 2.4.13, 3.0.x before 3.0.15, and 3.1.x before 3.1.9, and OTRS ITSM 2.1.x before 2.1.5, 3.0.x before 3.0.6, and 3.1.x before 3.1.6, allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via an e-mail message body with (1) a Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) expression property in the STYLE attribute of an arbitrary element or (2) UTF-7 text in an HTTP-EQUIV="CONTENT-TYPE" META element.
The weakness was disclosed 08/23/2012 by loneferret as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-2582 since 05/09/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed in Python. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74738 (openSUSE Security Update : otrs (openSUSE-SU-2012:1105-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165328 (SUSE Security Update for otrs: Fixed Security issue (openSUSE-SU-2012:1105-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
