GIMP up to 2.8.0 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in GIMP (Image Processing Software). Affected is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the KiSS CEL file format plug-in in GIMP 2.8.x and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted KiSS palette file, which triggers an "invalid free."

The weakness was presented 08/25/2012 by Murray McAllister as Bug 839020 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-3403 since 06/14/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70835 (GLSA-201311-05 : GIMP: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121147 (Solaris 11.1 Support Repository Update (SRU) 4.5 Missing).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (77880), Tenable (70835), SecurityFocus (BID 55101†), Secunia (SA50296†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1027411†). See VDB-7022, VDB-8392, VDB-61793 and VDB-61787 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
