The GLX extension in X.Org xserver 1.7.7 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (server crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via (1) a crafted request that triggers a client swap in glx/glxcmdsswap.c; or (2) a crafted length or (3) a negative value in the screen field in a request to glx/glxcmds.c.

The weakness was disclosed 09/05/2012 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at cgit.freedesktop.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-4818. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. A authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68367 (Oracle Linux 4 : xorg-x11 (ELSA-2011-1360)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350734 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for xorg-x11-server: ALAS-2011-013).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org.
