A vulnerability was found in Apple iTunes 10.6.3 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code block of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The weakness was disclosed 09/12/2012 by Abhishek Arya (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security Team as APPLE-SA-2012-09-12-1 as not defined posting (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Apple. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-3620 since 06/19/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The flaw has been found by using the open-source tool AddressSanitizer.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62077 (Apple iTunes < 10.7 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120376 (Apple Safari Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-07-25-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.7 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at apple.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Spotify as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
