A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Scott Wheeler TagLib up to 1.7. Affected by this issue is the function mid. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer overflow in the mid function in toolkit/tbytevector.cpp in TagLib 1.7 and earlier allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted file header field in a media file, which triggers a large memory allocation.
The weakness was disclosed 09/06/2012 (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-1584 since 03/12/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58690 (Fedora 17 : taglib-1.7.1-1.fc17 (2012-4184)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
