Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Moodle up to 2.3.1 (Learning Management Software). This affects some unknown functionality in the library webservice/lib.php of the component WebService. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
webservice/lib.php in Moodle 2.1.x before 2.1.8, 2.2.x before 2.2.5, and 2.3.x before 2.3.2 does not properly restrict the use of web-service tokens, which allows remote authenticated users to run arbitrary external-service functions via a token intended for only one service.
The weakness was disclosed 09/19/2012 by Alex as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.moodle.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-4402 since 08/21/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. A authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
By approaching the search of inurl:webservice/lib.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62337 (Fedora 16 : moodle-2.1.8-1.fc16 (2012-14295)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 2.1.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.moodle.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78688), Tenable (62337), SecurityFocus (BID 55565†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-36380†).
