A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in BackWPup 1.4.0 on WordPress (WordPress Plugin). This issue affects an unknown function of the file wp-content/plugins/backwpup/app/options-view_log-iframe.php. The manipulation of the argument wpabs with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in the BackWPup plugin before 1.4.1 for WordPress allow remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the wpabs parameter to (1) app/options-view_log-iframe.php or (2) app/options-runnow-iframe.php.
The bug was discovered 01/28/2011. The weakness was published 03/01/2011 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-5208 since 10/08/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:wp-content/plugins/backwpup/app/options-view_log-iframe.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Upgrading to version 1.4.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
