A vulnerability was found in Lars Hjemli cgit. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function substr of the file parsing.c. Heap-based buffer overflow in the substr function in parsing.c in cgit 0.9.0.3 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via an empty username in the "Author" field in a commit.
The weakness was shared 10/10/2012 by Jim Meyering as Bug 820733 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-4465 since 08/21/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation.
