A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple iTunes 10.6.3 (Multimedia Player Software). This issue affects an unknown part of the component WebKit. WebKit, as used in Apple iTunes before 10.7, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted web site, a different vulnerability than other WebKit CVEs listed in APPLE-SA-2012-09-12-1.
The weakness was published 09/12/2012 by Abhishek Arya (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security Team as APPLE-SA-2012-09-12-1 as confirmed posting (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated with Apple. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-3699 since 06/19/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62216 (Mac OS X : Apple Safari < 6.0.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120542 (Apple Safari Prior to 6.0.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-09-19-3)).
Upgrading to version 10.7 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at apple.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trac.webkit.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Spotify as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
