Details
A vulnerability was found in Gecad Axigen Free Mail Server (Mail Server Software) (unknown version). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block. The manipulation of the argument fileName with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in the View Log Files component in Axigen Free Mail Server allow remote attackers to read or delete arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in (1) the fileName parameter in a download action to source/loggin/page_log_dwn_file.hsp, or the fileName parameter in (2) an edit action or (3) a delete action to the default URI.
The weakness was shared 10/31/2012 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4940 since 09/17/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
It is possible to download the exploit at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as highly functional. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122590 (Axigen Mail Server "fileName" Parameter Directory Traversal Vulnerability).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79717), Exploit-DB (37996), SecurityFocus (BID 56343†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-46247†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
