A vulnerability was found in NVIDIA Unix Graphic Driver up to 304.31 (Hardware Driver Software) and classified as critical. NVIDIA UNIX graphics driver before 295.71 and before 304.32 allows local users to write to arbitrary physical memory locations and gain privileges by modifying the VGA window using /dev/nvidia0.
The weakness was disclosed 11/19/2012 (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-4225 since 08/08/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65862 (GLSA-201304-01 : NVIDIA Drivers: Privilege escalation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 304.32 eliminates this vulnerability.
