Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in X.org X11 up to 6.6 (Windowing System Software). Affected is the function SendErrToClient of the file difs/events.c of the component XFS Font Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The ProcSetEventMask function in difs/events.c in the xfs font server for X.Org X11R6 through X11R6.6 and XFree86 before 3.3.3 calls the SendErrToClient function with a mask value instead of a pointer, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and crash) or obtain potentially sensitive information from memory via a SetEventMask request that triggers an invalid pointer dereference.
The weakness was presented 12/21/2012 as Bug 842841 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-1699 since 03/16/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
