Details
A vulnerability was found in EMC Data Protection Advisor up to 5.8 and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Data Protection. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in the Web UI in EMC Data Protection Advisor (DPA) 5.6 through SP1, 5.7 through SP1, and 5.8 through SP4 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was disclosed 12/26/2012 by Andrea Micalizzi as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-4616 since 08/24/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/21/2021). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64703 (EMC Data Protection Advisor Web UI Directory Traversal), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (80810), Tenable (64703), SecurityFocus (BID 57046†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-38156†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
