Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple iOS up to 5.1.1 (Smartphone Operating System). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component FreeType. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
FreeType before 2.4.9, as used in Mozilla Firefox Mobile before 10.0.4 and other products, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (invalid heap read operation and memory corruption) or possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors involving the MIRP instruction in a TrueType font.
The weakness was shared 09/19/2012 by Mateusz Jurczyk with Google Security Team as APPLE-SA-2012-09-19-1 as not defined posting (Website). The advisory is shared at prod.lists.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-1138 since 02/14/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/13/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58864 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (380e8c56-8e32-11e1-9580-4061862b8c22)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165463 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for freetype2 (SUSE-SU-2012:0483-2)).
Upgrading to version 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Google Android as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
