A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 5.1.1 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component FreeType. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. FreeType before 2.4.9, as used in Mozilla Firefox Mobile before 10.0.4 and other products, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (invalid heap read operation and memory corruption) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted ASCII string in a BDF font.
The weakness was disclosed 09/19/2012 as APPLE-SA-2012-09-19-1 as not defined posting (Website). The advisory is shared for download at prod.lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-1141 since 02/14/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. Upgrading to version 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Google Android as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
