Apple iOS up to 5.1.1 ImageIO TIFF Image memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple iOS up to 5.1.1 (Smartphone Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component ImageIO. The manipulation as part of a TIFF Image leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the thunder (aka ThunderScan) decoder in tif_thunder.c in LibTIFF 3.9.4 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted THUNDER_2BITDELTAS data in a .tiff file that has an unexpected BitsPerSample value.

The weakness was presented 09/19/2012 by Martin Barbella as APPLE-SA-2012-09-19-1 as confirmed posting (Website). The advisory is available at prod.lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-1167 since 03/03/2011. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/22/2018). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68239 (Oracle Linux 4 / 5 / 6 : libtiff (ELSA-2011-0392)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120219 (Apple Mac OS X Lion v10.7.4 and Security Update 2012-002 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2012-05-09-1)).

Upgrading to version 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Google Android as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10729.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (66247), Tenable (68239), SecurityFocus (BID 46951†), OSVDB (71256†) and Secunia (SA43900†).
