Summary
A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in MariaDB. The impacted element is an unknown function of the component Replication. The manipulation leads to sql injection. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-4414. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. There is no exploit available.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in MariaDB (Database Software). This issue affects an unknown code of the component Replication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple SQL injection vulnerabilities in the replication code in Oracle MySQL possibly before 5.5.29, and MariaDB 5.1.x through 5.1.62, 5.2.x through 5.2.12, 5.3.x through 5.3.7, and 5.5.x through 5.5.25, allow remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary SQL commands via vectors related to the binary log. NOTE: as of 20130116, Oracle has not commented on claims from a downstream vendor that the fix in MySQL 5.5.29 is incomplete.
The weakness was shared 01/22/2013 (Website). The advisory is shared at mariadb.atlassian.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-4414 since 08/21/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1505 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75141 (openSUSE Security Update : mariadb (openSUSE-SU-2013:0011-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165822 (SUSE Security Update for mysql-community-server (openSUSE-SU-2013:0135-1)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78421), Tenable (75141), SecurityFocus (BID 55498†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-38352†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
