SSSD prior 1.0.0 Security Service ssh_cmd_parse_request memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in SSSD. This affects the function ssh_cmd_parse_request of the component Security Service. Such manipulation leads to memory corruption. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-0220. No exploit exists. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in SSSD. Affected by this issue is the function ssh_cmd_parse_request of the component Security Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The (1) sss_autofs_cmd_getautomntent and (2) sss_autofs_cmd_getautomntbyname function in responder/autofs/autofssrv_cmd.c and the (3) ssh_cmd_parse_request function in responder/ssh/sshsrv_cmd.c in System Security Services Daemon (SSSD) before 1.9.4 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read, crash, and restart) via a crafted SSSD packet.

The weakness was disclosed 02/24/2013 by Florian Weimer (Website). The advisory is shared for download at fedorahosted.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-0220 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65142 (CentOS 6 : sssd (CESA-2013:0508)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120968 (Red Hat Update for SSSD (RHSA-2013:0508)).

Upgrading to version 1.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (81509), Tenable (65142), SecurityFocus (BID 57539†), Secunia (SA51928†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-38616†). The entry VDB-63631 is pretty similar. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
