GNOME Evolution before 3.2.3 allows user-assisted remote attackers to read arbitrary files via the attachment parameter to a mailto: URL, which attaches the file to the email.
The weakness was published 03/08/2013 by Matt McCutchen as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.gnome.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-3201 since 08/19/2011. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68753 (Oracle Linux 6 : evolution (ELSA-2013-0516)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123507 (Solaris 11.2 Support Repository Update (SRU) 8.4.0 Missing).
Upgrading to version 3.0.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.gnome.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
