A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Poppler 0.22.0 (Document Reader Software). This affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
poppler before 0.22.1 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors that trigger an "invalid memory access" in (1) splash/Splash.cc, (2) poppler/Function.cc, and (3) poppler/Stream.cc.
The weakness was presented 04/09/2013 by Marcus Meissner as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at cgit.freedesktop.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-1788 since 02/19/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67236 (Debian DSA-2719-1 : poppler - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166654 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for poppler (SUSE-SU-2013:0596-1)).
Upgrading to version 0.22.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
