Use-after-free vulnerability in the Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) implementation in Google Chrome before 19.0.1084.52 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact via vectors related to the :first-letter pseudo-element.
The weakness was presented 09/19/2012 by Christian Holler (miaubiz) with Chromium Development Community as APPLE-SA-2012-09-19-1 as confirmed posting (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at prod.lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-3105 since 08/09/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62216 (Mac OS X : Safari < 6.0.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120542 (Apple Safari Prior to 6.0.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-09-19-3)).
Upgrading to version 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Google Android as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
