A vulnerability was found in Joomla CMS up to 3.0.3 (Content Management System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the file plugins/system/remember/remember.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. plugins/system/remember/remember.php in Joomla! 2.5.x before 2.5.10 and 3.0.x before 3.0.4 does not properly handle an object obtained by unserializing a cookie, which allows remote authenticated users to conduct PHP object injection attacks and cause a denial of service via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was disclosed 05/03/2013 by Egidio Romano (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-3242 since 04/22/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by EgiX and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:plugins/system/remember/remember.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66250 (FreeBSD : Joomla! -- XXS and DDoS vulnerabilities (57df803e-af34-11e2-8d62-6cf0490a8c18)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12858 (Joomla! remember.php PHP Object Injection Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 2.5.10 or 3.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
