A vulnerability has been found in Apple iOS up to 5.1.1 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. WebKit, as used in Apple Safari before 6.0, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted web site, a different vulnerability than other WebKit CVEs listed in APPLE-SA-2012-07-25-1.
The weakness was disclosed 09/19/2012 by Jose A. Vazquez (iDefense) with Apple as APPLE-SA-2012-09-19-1 as not defined posting (Website). The advisory is shared for download at prod.lists.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0682 since 01/12/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 04/13/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62357 (Apple TV < 5.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120376 (Apple Safari Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-07-25-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Google Android as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
