The Mozilla Updater in Mozilla Firefox before 21.0 on Windows does not properly maintain Mozilla Maintenance Service registry entries in certain situations involving upgrades from older Firefox versions, which allows local users to gain privileges by leveraging write access to a "trusted path."

The weakness was disclosed 05/16/2013 as Bug 854088 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1673 since 02/13/2013. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66476 (Firefox < 21.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121178 (Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird Multiple Vulnerabilities (MFSA 2013-41 through MFSA 2013-48)).
